Wall sawing vs hand sawing

Two families of tools cut openings in concrete walls, and the wrong choice shows: either you pay track-saw money for a partition a hand saw would open in an hour, or you get a wavy hand-cut line through a wall that deserved a track. Here is how the choice actually works.

The two toolsets

Track (wall) sawing. A blade on a motorized carriage rides a track bolted to the wall. The machine supplies the force and the track supplies the line — cuts are dead straight, plumb, and repeatable, with depth builds to roughly 20–30 in using staged passes and large blades. Setup takes real time per cut line (anchoring track, rigging power and water), which is the method’s only downside. Full picture on the wall sawing service page.

Hand sawing. Handheld cut-off saws reach roughly 5–6 in per face; ring saws (blade driven from the rim) push a handheld cut to about 10 in; chain-type concrete saws reach deeper still in skilled hands and excel at plunge cuts and corners. Setup is minimal — the operator walks up and cuts — but line quality is human, and depth is limited.

The three questions that decide it

1. How thick is the wall?

  • Up to ~6 in (typical CMU partitions): hand saw territory, often cut from one face.
  • 6–10 in: ring saw from one face, or hand saws from both faces matched to line — the classic residential door opening in block.
  • 8–12 in cast concrete: track saw becomes the honest answer; double-face hand cutting through structural walls invites misalignment.
  • Beyond track depth: wire sawing.

2. How straight must the cut be?

If the reveal gets a frame, a buck, or glazing set against it — door openings, windows, storefronts — track-cut edges save the finishing trades from shimming a wavy line. If the edge gets buried, patched, or demolished anyway (an opening being enlarged next month, a removal cut), hand-cut quality is fine and cheaper.

3. What do the corners need?

A circular blade cannot finish a square corner without over-cutting — the blade’s arc runs past the corner point on the face where it cuts deepest. On removal work nobody cares. On a finished opening in an exposed wall, over-cuts are scars. The professional finish: track-saw the straight runs, stop short of corners, and finish them square with a hand/ring saw or by core drilling a hole at each corner point. Engineers sometimes require drilled corners on structural openings — a round corner resists cracking better than a sharp one.

Cost logic

Hand sawing wins small: one opening in a block partition rarely justifies track setup time. Track sawing wins everything else on real walls: per foot of cut, the machine is faster and the quality is included. What to send for an accurate method call

  • Opening dimensions and count
  • Wall thickness and construction (block, cast, precast — photos of both faces answer this)
  • What the finished edge must receive (frame, glazing, patch, nothing)
  • Access on both sides, and what’s behind the wall

That’s four lines in the request form, and it is the difference between “we’ll figure it out on site” and a firm number with the right tool on the truck.
