Slurry control on concrete cutting jobs

Every wet cutting method — coring, wall sawing, slab sawing, wire sawing — produces slurry: water carrying extremely fine cement and aggregate particles. On a well-run job it is a non-event. On a badly run one it is stained terrazzo, a flooded tenant, or an environmental citation. This guide covers what professionals do with it.

What slurry is and why it is regulated

Cutting slurry looks like gray water but behaves like neither. It is highly alkaline (cement chemistry pushes pH toward 12), and its ultra-fine solids settle and harden wherever they stop — in pipes, on finishes, in soil. That combination is why discharging slurry to a storm drain is illegal essentially everywhere in the US: storm systems drain to surface water untreated, and alkaline sediment-laden discharge harms them directly. Municipal stormwater rules — including in Miami-Dade — treat it as a prohibited non-stormwater discharge, with real fines attached.

The professional rule is simple: all slurry gets captured, and nothing reaches a drain you can’t name.

Containment on the cutting floor

Standard practice scales with the setting:

  • Slurry rings and collars around core holes catch water at the source; the wet vacuum runs continuously alongside the drill.
  • Berms and dikes — foam or clay dams — corral the runoff path on slab sawing runs so the vacuum crew works a defined pool, not a spreading lake.
  • Plastic sheeting and floor protection along travel paths and over finishes that would stain.
  • Wet vacuums with capacity planned to the day’s water volume, emptied into drums or totes — not into the landscaping.

The situation everyone worries about: occupied space below

When a core will punch through a deck over an occupied unit, water follows gravity through the hole the moment the bit breaks through. The standard countermeasures:

  • Containment below: sheeting and a catch basin rigged under the exit point in the space below — which means access to that space is part of the plan.
  • Minimum-water technique topside: controlled feed, vacuum at the collar, and pausing water before breakthrough.
  • Method switch: where below-access is impossible, the conversation moves to dry drilling or rescheduling to when access exists.

This is why the request form asks what is under each core. It is not curiosity — it is the difference between a priced plan and an incident report.

Disposal: where the slurry actually goes

Recovered slurry is handled one of two ways:

  1. Settle and separate — solids settle in drums or a weir tank; clarified water can then be reused for cutting or discharged only where the site’s rules allow (a sanitary connection with permission, never storm); settled solids dry and go out as construction debris.
  2. Solidify and haul — absorbent or solidifying agents turn slurry into a stable solid disposed of with demolition debris. Fast, clean, standard on small volumes.

On commercial projects, the GC’s SWPPP or the building’s rules may dictate the specifics — one more reason slurry responsibility belongs in the scope split: who contains, who hauls, who signs for disposal. The quote requirements guide includes it in the standard checklist.

What to ask any cutting contractor

  • How will you contain water at the cut, and what happens below the deck?
  • Where does recovered slurry go, and who takes it off site?
  • What protection goes down along the route from cut to exit?
